The Rich Just Don't Get It
"Okay go get what you want. Hurry. I have a dinner appointment."
"Yes, father,"
The boy walked across the showroom.
"Isn't it beautiful?"
"What, the black beauty? Dude, you've been staring at it for months. When are you gonna get it?"
"I don't know man. I've got cash flow issues."
One of a group of college students reached out to grab the guitar. He sat down and strummed a few chords. He took his pick out of his back pocket and started belting out improvised solos and a few Guns and Roses covers.
"Sigh… $950... One day. One day, baby, you will be mine."
The boy at the other end of the room gazed into the Gibson LE room. Shortly joined by his father.
"That one looks nice, father."
"Huh. Go get someone to help."
And the boy wandered off.
The students had drifted behind to the acoustic section. They were now having a sort of mini jam session. It was all in good heart. Acoustic covers and random chords. The air of creativity and friendship.
"Hey, you're thinking of getting into guitar right? This is a good one to start out with. Its cheap, its easy to use, and it has everything you need to start"
"How much is it?"
"Err. Lets see. Where's the price tag…"
The father was standing outside the custom shop, looking at the Slash Limited Edition Studio Les Paul. He looked back at the kid. He was coming back with a sales manager.
"Which one?"
"This one, father"
"How much is it?"
The salesperson came in at this point;
"This is one of Gibson's Limited Edition Slash series of Les Pauls. It comes in at $4,500"
"Ah. Found it. Er. Its $450."
"Shit that's quite a bit isn't it?"
"$4,500? That’s not so bad. Why don't you try it out?"
"But...?"
"Go try it out."
"Yes, Father."
The Salesperson hooked it up to a nearby amp and the kid started to play some simple scales.
He then played a very rough cover of Guns and Roses' Knockin' on Heaven's Door.
"Shush! Stop strumming!"
"What? Why?"
"Do you hear that?"
"What?"
"Knocking on heaven's door!"
"Huh?"
"Just come on!"
And they rushed out to see the kid play.
The sound of the high-quality guitar attracted the patrons to the source. Really quickly, a small crowd was forming.
The boy started to get nervous. He knew his playing was sub-par. He did not enjoy it at all.
"Alright, I'm getting it. Where's the lady?"
"She's behind there, father."
"Go get her."
"She's already coming."
"Oh my god."
"What?"
"That's the Slash Custom!"
"Oh…"
"AND ITS A GIBSON!"
